Nice Guy Eddies - Intersection - Houston St (1 of 3) & Ave A / East Village (Wed 17 Aug 2011)
The buildings on the north side of West Houston Street are beautifully lit by the late afternoon sun that pours in directly from the south (always get a little disoriented in northern hemisphere).
The geometry, colour and clarity of the scene caught my eye as well as the safety barrier and street art on the ground level of Nice Guy Eddies.

Love his Peter Garret (of Midnight Oil Fame) like moves in the crowd as he moves around to find and capture the great street photos he always produces, even for this small demonstration video.

Collage - Hyde Park / Sydney Life 2011
Always look forward to Sydney Life, which is just about to finish it's month long run in Hyde Park.
Love the way the large format canvas photos are framed by the garden surroundings of the park.
This is my collage of this year's photos that I took late this afternoon.

The decayed black bubble gum markings above his head (and elsewhere) become part of the black spray paint, while the cigarette butt makes us realise the photo is colour and not black and white (which we would otherwise think).

A Photographers Lament - - Matt Weber (Oct 2011)
A fantastic interview (*) with Matt Weber (*) over at the equally great Street Reverb [magazine] (*) Street Photography web site.
I can relate to many of Matt's insights (*) into photographing on the street.
Having already posted about photography related regrets (*), the following quote caught my eye...
Regrets of missed opportunities have plagued me, but also helped me greatly. I can lament a missed shot for a very long time, if I think it may have been epic. Those type of shots are far and few between.Having just returned from Matt's hometown of New York (*) and reading his story (*) inspired me to post the DGK series of photos (*) and explain what I was thinking as I took the photos. It is great when someone like Matt talks about and shares their photography insights as well as their own photographic trials and tribulations.
In order to spare myself the self inflicted torture which follows missing a potentially great photograph, I’ve learned three things from my mistakes.Fear and or embarrassment, has cost me a handful of images which I’m certain would have been very important to me. It’s hard to block out emotions sometimes, but if you want to be a “Nice Guy” and never upset a soul, you’ll be better off doing something else.
- Never leave home without your camera. Never do it!
- Always keep at least one extra roll of film, or these days an extra battery and CF card I suppose.
- Lastly, don’t hesitate when you see something fantastic.
Also I'm a big believer in learning from mistakes (*).

Press the shutter a couple of more times and this is the better photo because of the skateboard position.
All done now .. time to move on,

After the initial spotting (*), decided to make myself interested in the posters on the wall.
Maybe the DGK Guy (*) won't care too much. He's still head down on his phone, as is half of New York.
Just see how he responds.
Good no problems.
BTW, great posters. Lots of details in them, particularly when viewed on the original photo.

Just found another SD card that I had forgotten about. Has some photos from Thu 18 Aug 2011 (*) taken on my G10 that I used in conjunction with my S95.
I did not take my spare battery for the S95 on the trip and found I was missing photos towards the end of the day because of a flat battery. Used the G10 sometimes to make sure I could still take photos at the end of the day.
This photos captures the spectacular light and colour of New York on a sunny summers afternoon. The hunched over silhouetted figure in the foreground and the deicate shadows of the lighting above the large billboards makes the photo for me.

Live, Work, Create. - Ramercy / New York (Wed 17 Aug 2011)
Knew I photographed this for a reason. It seems to say what might motivate me to post here. Also makes me think of creative people such as Steve Jobs who sadly passed away from pancreatic cancer yesterday.
Like many from his generation (he was about 5.5 yearrs older than me), I have lived through and watched the development, release and have used the products from the very beginning of personal computing.
I now type this on one of his innovations, an iPad sitting on a train on my daily commute - who would ever thought that all those years ago when I was still at school. Well, Steve did and through hard work he motivated a company which was fortunate enough to be the first to convert a dream into a reality for us - the masses.
His passing has touched many, including those who were not hugh fans of the Apple worshipping and hysteria that Steve was so good at creating at product releases and conferences.
It is always sad when someone passes away so young, but this was his destiny, just as Jenny had her own destiny and for all of us for that matter.
I feel some empathy towards Steve's Family and it is all in front of them, though I don't believe that Steve's passing was unexpected. Hopefully, they had their chances to say goodbye (*).
No matter what people thought of him, he was a great innovator, leader, businessman and he was never afraid of taking a risk or failure.
Lots of online tributes have popped all over the web.
Found a commencement speech (*) Steve made back in 2005 (*) at Stanford University. The last few paragraphs are very touching and worth remembering here for me ..
You can tell he has confronted his own mortality.
Maybe this is what I would like to remember from Steve’s Speech ..
Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life.Thanks Steve, your legacy has allowed me to ..
Don't be trapped by dogma, which is living with the results of other people's thinking.
Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice, heart and intuition.
They somehow already know what you truly want to become.
Everything else is secondary.

Manhattan Bridge (2 of 2) - Dumbo / Brooklyn / New York (Wed 17 Aug 2011)
The Empire State Building is beautifully lit by the late summer afternoon sun. The large and iconic building becomes the tiny figure in the landscape and the magnificent old bridge takes centre stage, as it justly deserves.
Manhattan Bridge (1 of 2) - Dumbo / Brooklyn / New York (Fri 12 Aug 2011)
It might be a boring midday photo with not too much interest. I like it because of the depth of the photo ...
Brooklyn Bridge on ramp foreground, Dumbo and East River middle ground, Manhattan Bridge background and the Empire State Building distant background.... and the zig-zagging nature of the key elements that lead you through the photo. And besides some weathered yellow and a little bit of orange never goes astray.

A little Googling (*) reveals some details of the Mural titled Intersection:The creators indicate (*):
The mural was designed with site-specific ideas in mind: lines of seven colors meet corrugated vertical bars of the fence behind it. Our concept mimics and bends these lines, creating a colorful graphic symbolizing the constant movement of DUMBO. The design is an abstracted interpretation of intersecting train tracks and the familiar New York City subway map.From the Wikipedia page Dumbo, Brooklyn (*), Dumbo refers to:
The use of vivid colors against the urban backdrop of grays and browns is intended to brighten the landscape and produce a visceral and emotional reaction, while referencing the cross-sections of cultures and people who view it.
Dumbo, an acronym for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass, is a neighborhood in the New York City, New York, borough of Brooklyn.Learnt about this just now when searching for the name of the large framed Mural on the fence. Learn something everyday.
It encompasses two sections: one located between the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges, which connect Brooklyn to Manhattan across the East River, and another that continues east from the Manhattan Bridge to the Vinegar Hill area.
The neighborhood is part of Brooklyn Community Board 2.
Jerry Seinfeld once referred to Dumbo on a late-night talk show appearance, joking that it stands for "Down Under Manhattan Bridge," but that New Yorkers arbitrarily added the "O" at the end because they did not want to have a neighborhood called "Dumb."
