The Balancing Act between Looking and Doing - The Story of Telling (Fri 17 Oct 2014)

Look - Street Portrait (*) - Oxford Street / London (Fri 12 Sep 2014)

Bernadette (*) writes:
sometimes you forget to stop looking and start doing. [..]

Great works or art, design, graffiti (*) and literature from Banksy to Brontë are all inspired (*) by lived experiences (*) or drawn from within.

Your inspiration (*) is all around you in your day to day. Your advantage probably already exists.

You’re just not looking there. Yet.

Trent Parke (*) writes On The Photographic Process (*) and Disocvery (*):
Question everything. Make work that is meaningful to you. Take time.

I have always found that mistakes and accidents usually lead to the best discoveries.

Untitled - Oxford Street / London (Sun 18 Aug 2013)

Alex Webb (*) writes On Photography (*):
I'm a street photographer (*) at heart, so I approached Rochester (*) [the subject (*) - see HCB post (*) specifically] the same way I often approach somewhere I'm shooting, [..] Walking, meandering, allowing my camera and experiences (*) to guide me.

On What is Seen - Michael David Murphy (Mon 12 May 2014)

Untitled - Oxford Street (Sat 17 Aug 2013)

Michael David Murphy (*) writes On What is Seen (*):
how we see is less important than what is seen. The former are questions for a machine: which lens? Which film? Which speed? The latter includes the most severe and gut-wrenching choices for a dedicated, free-thinking artist.

On Street Photography - Haris P / Eric Kim (Sun 23 Feb 2014)

Street Portrait - Oxford Street / London (Sat 17 Aug 2013)

Haris P (*) writes On Street Photography (*):
[..] tips I would give street photographers would be the following:
  1. Search for the light (*),

  2. Search for the place (*),

  3. Search for the character(s) (*),

  4. Wait for the moment (*)..
And if you find all these things– don’t be satisfied with mediocrity.

Not-ordinary photos are nice but not enough. Extra-ordinary (*) photos are your target.

On Instinct: The Good and The Bad - Tony Fouhse (Fri 01 Nov 2013)

Heart - Oxford Street / London (Sat 17 Aug 2013)

Tony Fouhse (*) writes On Instinct (*):
In my experience (*) most people's good instincts (*) are remarkably similar, while their bad instincts are often particular. By embracing your good and bad ideas (*) and impulses, by figuring out how to incorporate them into your life (*) and your work, you somehow become more yourself. Plus, you'll probably end up in unfamiliar (*) territory, a place that will engage (*) you in ways you can't imagine (*), make you feel more alive (*).

On Gestures - Jorg Colberg / Conscientious Photography Magazine (Tue 28 Jan 2014)

Untitled - Oxford Street / London (Sat 17 Aug 2013)

Jorg Colberg (*) writes On Gestures (*) and Photography (*):
Gestures (*), the way people use their hands (*) and facial expressions (*), are very hard to deal with photographically.

One of the complications appears to be that the moment we are made to look at a gesture (*), frozen in a photograph, we have to pay attention to something we usually do not think about.

And then it gets weird very quickly.

Dorothee Deiss (*) writes On Portrait Photography (*):
In my mind a good portrait strives for honesty (*), truth (*), intensity (*), empathy (*) and respect (*). It dignifies and makes some kind of beauty visible. It is an emotionally striking picture of somebody, where one could catch a glimpse behind the surface.
