Brooklyn Bridge - Brooklyn (Wed 17 Aug 2011)

Sam Esmail on Angst and Anger:

It's not necessarily bad that you have angst or you have anger – it's what you do with it, how you interpret it into something profoundly moving

Manhattan Bridge (1 of 2) - Dumbo / Brooklyn / New York (Fri 12 Aug 2011)

Manhattan Bridge (1 of 2) - Dumbo / Brooklyn / New York (Fri 12 Aug 2011)

It might be a boring midday photo with not too much interest. I like it because of the depth of the photo ...
Brooklyn Bridge on ramp foreground, Dumbo and East River middle ground, Manhattan Bridge background and the Empire State Building distant background.
... and the zig-zagging nature of the key elements that lead you through the photo. And besides some weathered yellow and a little bit of orange never goes astray.

Yarn Bicycle - Agata Olek - Brooklyn Bridge / New York (Fri 12 Aug 2011)

Yarn Bicycle - Agata Olek (*) - Brooklyn Bridge (*) / New York (Fri 12 Aug 2011)

Rachel, Rob and I decided to cross the Brooklyn Bridge (*) from the Brooklyn side. This Agata Olek (*) yarn bicycle (*) is what greeted us at the base of the steps that take you up and onto the Brooklyn Bridge (*). Like the touch of orange in the crochet and the converging support beams of the Brooklyn Bridge above us.

Whatever you do, walk over the Brooklyn Bridge.

Ken Burns (2004 Yale Commencement Speech)

In 1988, at the age of 27, I took my first overseas trip - a seven week holiday to the USA from late September to early November 1988 - I remember flying back into Tamworth on Melbourne Cup day - we were in flight when the Captain announced the result of the race.

Spent most of my time in New York and Boston where I stayed with friends. I also took a weekend trip to Chicago from New York. On my return I spent a few days in Los Angeles and a few days in Sydney at Alexandria.

Recently found the above photo after this recent post
City of Blinding Lights - U2 - Live - Brooklyn Bridge - 22 Nov 2004 (youtube)
I can remember this evening visit to the Northern Tower of the World Trade Center. It was a still night and I was able to walk out onto and around the exposed and elevated viewing platform at the top of the Tower. It is there that I took this photo of the Brooklyn Bridge (the closer one, the next one along is the Manhattan Bridge), which a few days earlier I had walked across.

I will try to find the photos of the walk across the Brooklyn Bridge - they are somewhere at Kirrawee. I pulled out the above photo shortly after the Tower's were lost and just accidently stumbled across them in one of the desk drawers recently.

Ken Burns (2004 Yale Commencement Speech)

Bono's preamble to the song in this video gives some idea to the meaning of the song to him. It was about:
a time in our lives when we did not know how powerful it was not to know.

This is a song about innocence and naïvete.
For me, the song reminds me of my first winter dragon boat campaign - the 2005 World Dragon Boat Championships in Berlin. Heard this song a lot while at the gym back then.

Have already walked the Brooklyn Bridge way back in 1988. Will do it again later in the year.

City of Blinding Lights Lyrics

The more you see, the less you know
The less you find out as you go
I knew much more then than I do now

Neon heart day-glow eyes
A city lit by fireflies
They're advertising in the skies
For people like us

And I miss you when you're not around
I'm getting ready to leave the ground

Oh you look so beautiful tonight
In the city of blinding lights

Don't look before you laugh
Look ugly in a photograph
Flash bulbs purple irises
The camera can't see

I've seen you walk unafraid
I've seen you in the clothes you made
Can you see the beauty inside of me?
What happened to the beauty I had inside of me?

And I miss you when you're not around
I'm getting ready to leave the ground

Oh you look so beautiful tonight
In the city of blinding lights

Time...time...time...time...time
Won't leave me as I am
But time won't take the boy out of this man

Oh you look so beautiful tonight
Oh you look so beautiful tonight
Oh you look so beautiful tonight
In the city of blinding lights

The more you know the less you feel
Some pray for others steal
Blessings are not just for the ones who kneel... luckily
