On Saul Leiter - Saul Leiter Early Color / Martin Harrison (Jul 2005)

Untitled - Lower East Side / New York (Wed 17 Aug 2011)

Martin Harrison (*) writes on Saul Leiter (*), Color Photography (*) and embracing the Unpredictable (*):
Yet he found ways to circumvent these restrictions - exploiting the color distortions in outdated film stock and embracing the unpredictable color rendition in emulsions available from some of the smaller manufacturers. His openness to the accidental, and willingness to forgo the photographer's legendary control, are crucial components of Leiter's ethos, anticipating precepts that remained exceptional, even among photography's avante-garde, until the advent of postmodernism in the 1970's.

Follow Your Own Path - David Brooks / NYT (Wed 27 Jun 2012)

"Black Abstraction" Abstraction - Georgia O'Keefe - The Met / New York (Mon 15 Aug 2012)

David Brooks makes some interesting observations (*) about growing up, locality and following your own path:
Don't try to be everyman. Don't pretend you're a member of every community you visit. Don't try to be citizens of some artificial globalized community. Go deeper into your own tradition. Call more upon the geography of your own past. Be distinct and credible. People will come.
On Black Abstraction (*) - I had known of Georgia O'Keefe through her relationship with Alfred_Stieglitz (*) (I have a book on his life, but can't remember it's title or where it is now). When I walked into the Gallery Hall with her paintings, I knew I would spend some time there. There were many colourful paintings of abstract views of flowers, desert scenes and buffalo skulls. Black Abstraction caught my gaze and I just stood in front of it and thought of many things. Maybe I thought the dark painting reflected how I felt after recent experiences.

Becoming a little abstract and self absorbed (as i do this time of the year). The path through the painting represented my journey since Jenny left us and I had become stuck (*) in this place (I had known this for some time). The little bright white dot gave me hope that there was something still inside me and all it would take was a small sign to get me on my way again. Funnily enough, it would come two days later on a Subway Train. It was such a tiny gesture (*) by a complete stranger.

Maybe the importance to me of such a tiny and simple gesture, indicated how low I had sunk in my journey in life without Jenny there beside me. I don't know really, like most things. Anyway I did like the painting and I am glad this post gave me the opportunity to put the photo here and to research it's background a little more.

To finish, I love this quote by Georgia O'Keefe on Abstraction:
Abstraction is often the most definite form for the intangible thing in myself that I can only clarify in paint.
Maybe I could say the same thing except apply it to photography, as my words seem totally inadequate to describe where I have been, what I have felt and where I think I am heading.

A Google search (*) reveals a bit more about the Red Poster/Print on the door ..
Mysterious prints of the "Colbert Report" host were spotted in the neighborhood earlier this year, featuring the bespectacled funnyman in a riff on Andy Warhol’s famous Campbell’s Soup can painting.

Now, posters of the mock newsman reimagined as a mash-up between the Statue of Liberty and Boticelli’s iconic "Birth of Venus" painting — accompanied by the words "Stevenus Coliberty" — have appeared inexplicably on mailboxes and walls throughout the East Village.

Nice Guy Eddies (*) - Intersection - Houston St (1 of 3) & Ave A / East Village (Wed 17 Aug 2011)

The buildings on the north side of West Houston Street are beautifully lit by the late afternoon sun that pours in directly from the south (always get a little disoriented in northern hemisphere).

The geometry, colour and clarity of the scene caught my eye as well as the safety barrier and street art on the ground level of Nice Guy Eddies.

A Photographers Lament - - Matt Weber (Oct 2011)

Blurry Cats - Flatiron District - New York (Wed 17 Aug 2011)

A fantastic interview (*) with Matt Weber (*) over at the equally great Street Reverb [magazine] (*) Street Photography web site.

I can relate to many of Matt's insights (*) into photographing on the street.

Having already posted about photography related regrets (*), the following quote caught my eye...
Regrets of missed opportunities have plagued me, but also helped me greatly. I can lament a missed shot for a very long time, if I think it may have been epic. Those type of shots are far and few between.

In order to spare myself the self inflicted torture which follows missing a potentially great photograph, I’ve learned three things from my mistakes.
  • Never leave home without your camera. Never do it!

  • Always keep at least one extra roll of film, or these days an extra battery and CF card I suppose.

  • Lastly, don’t hesitate when you see something fantastic.
Fear and or embarrassment, has cost me a handful of images which I’m certain would have been very important to me. It’s hard to block out emotions sometimes, but if you want to be a “Nice Guy” and never upset a soul, you’ll be better off doing something else.
Having just returned from Matt's hometown of New York (*) and reading his story (*) inspired me to post the DGK series of photos (*) and explain what I was thinking as I took the photos. It is great when someone like Matt talks about and shares their photography insights as well as their own photographic trials and tribulations.

Also I'm a big believer in learning from mistakes (*).

So much to learn from and to be inspired by - thanks Matt Weber (*) and Bryan Formhals (* of Street Reverb [magazine] (*)
