Street Scene - Prince Street / SoHo / New York (Thu 18 Aug 2011)

Street Scene - Prince Street / SoHo / New York (Thu 18 Aug 2011)

The mid afternoon light on the northern side of the street was quite soft, much less contrasty than I'm used to back home in Sydney. The light was beautiful here and I took quite a few photographs, so there might be a few more to come.

Saw the following photo by Jan Meissner (*) last week from here (*) where the work was described by Nick Turpin (*) as:
graphic color scenes of the New York sidewalk often take parallel to the buildings which had a continuity of approach
When I saw the photo I felt I had seen something similar. If you look at both closely they are the same street. Small world.

BE NOT AFRAID LADY - Crosby St / SoHo / New York (Thu 18 Aug 2011)

BE NOT AFRAID LADY - Crosby St / SoHo / New York (Thu 18 Aug 2011)

Noticed this text marking and thought I would wait around and see what I could get. Have a few photos here and I now regret not waiting a little longer to get a stronger photo of the obvious thing I was trying to do here.

The decayed black bubble gum markings above his head (and elsewhere) become part of the black spray paint, while the cigarette butt makes us realise the photo is colour and not black and white (which we would otherwise think).

DGK All Day (5 of 5) - Soho / New York (Thu 18 Aug 2011)

DGK All Day (5 of 5) - Soho / New York (Thu 18 Aug 2011)

A little closer now and the head is down.

Starting to wish he would look me in the eye.

Press the shutter a couple of more times and this is the better photo because of the skateboard position.

All done now .. time to move on,

Just like life, who knows what's a bit further up the street.

DGK All Day (4 of 5) vs Banana Republic - Soho / New York (Thu 18 Aug 2011)

But wait a moment .. (*)

Always looking out.

Notice someone on my right walking down the pavement ..

Wait (*) just a little longer ...

Either she does not notice me or does not care.
Note to self - have to stop worrying about what people think about me and my camera (the G10 is lot bigger than the S95).
Press shutter and I have another Pair of People (*). Seem to be getting a few of those here in busy New York (*).

OK. Now time to get a little closer without zooming. He wouldn't have a clue ..

DGK All Day (3 of 5) - Soho / New York (Thu 18 Aug 2011)

Move back a little and try to get more of the scene.

He's off the phone now and not really noticing or caring about me.

Great, the underside of the skateboard is colourful..

Maybe time to get a little closer?

But wait a moment ..

DGK All Day (2 of 5) - Soho / New York (Thu 18 Aug 2011)

After the initial spotting (*), decided to make myself interested in the posters on the wall.

Maybe the DGK Guy (*) won't care too much. He's still head down on his phone, as is half of New York.

Just see how he responds.

Good no problems.

BTW, great posters. Lots of details in them, particularly when viewed on the original photo.

Calvin Klein - E Houston St / New York (Thu 18 Aug 2011)

Calvin Klein - E Houston St / Soho / New York (Thu 18 Aug 2011)

Just found another SD card that I had forgotten about. Has some photos from Thu 18 Aug 2011 (*) taken on my G10 that I used in conjunction with my S95.

I did not take my spare battery for the S95 on the trip and found I was missing photos towards the end of the day because of a flat battery. Used the G10 sometimes to make sure I could still take photos at the end of the day.

This photos captures the spectacular light and colour of New York on a sunny summers afternoon. The hunched over silhouetted figure in the foreground and the deicate shadows of the lighting above the large billboards makes the photo for me.
