Stance - Streetshooter (Wed 11 May 2016)

trees / rocks / shadows - Wilpena (Tue 12 Apr 2016)

Streetshooter on Stance:

I felt an energy come into me, not over me but into me. [..] What was born back then was not just me as a photographer but a photographer with a stance. I mean it gave birth to a realization of my own self worth. [..]

I don’t practice photography, I live it. I don’t just make photos, my photos define me as well. [..]

It requires a firm appreciation of the whole that we are and a total committed love of what we do and why we do it and how we do it.

Chris Moller on Design:

What we often undervalue is the importance of thinking things through thoroughly before we do them .. The quality of good design makes a huge difference

On Saul Leiter - Saul Leiter Early Color / Martin Harrison (Jul 2005)

Untitled - Lower East Side / New York (Wed 17 Aug 2011)

Martin Harrison (*) writes on Saul Leiter (*), Color Photography (*) and embracing the Unpredictable (*):
Yet he found ways to circumvent these restrictions - exploiting the color distortions in outdated film stock and embracing the unpredictable color rendition in emulsions available from some of the smaller manufacturers. His openness to the accidental, and willingness to forgo the photographer's legendary control, are crucial components of Leiter's ethos, anticipating precepts that remained exceptional, even among photography's avante-garde, until the advent of postmodernism in the 1970's.

On Light - Rinzi Ruiz (Feb 2013)

The Wall - Berlin (Tue 09 Aug 2005)

Rinzi Ruiz (*) writes On Light (*):
Light (*) is essential to photography (*). [..]

I purposefully (*) and consciously see the light and chase it. [..]

It brought depth and mood to my images. It brought out the vivid colors (to some), and added shapes and geometry to my images. I search for light and also look for the shapes the shadows (*) make. [..]

I love (*) how light (*) reveals and how shadow (*) hides elements in the photograph.
via Chasing Light (*) by Rinzi Ruiz (*).

I have come to the same conclusion a long time ago. A great and passionate post about photography.

On Chaos and Photography - Curran Hatleberg (Jul 2013)

On the way to Gaudi's House (*) in Parc Guell (*) - Barcelona (Thu 08 Aug 2013)

Curran Hatleberg (*) writes Street Photography (*):
Public life in the street is uncontrolled and random.

This goes for all cities.

Within that chaos exists profound mystery and beauty.

It’s something you can depend on.

The flood of details and of activity envelops you.

It is vivid, voluble and generous.

There is no shortage of inexplicable arrangements that defy casual explanation, and the amazing thing is they are happening all the time!
via Something more felt than known: a conversation with Curran Hatleberg (*) at The Great Leap Sideways (*).

The shadow (*) of the tree caught my eye and I could not help myself but take this photo.

On Black and White - Daido Moriyama

Hazelhurst Passageway - Monochrome - Gymea (Sat 08 Dec 2012)

Daido Moriyama (*) on Black and White:
Monochrome has stronger elements of abstraction or symbolism.

There is perhaps an element of taking you to another place.

Thats just the way I respond to things.

Black and white has that physical effect on me.
On Colour, he explains:
Colour is something more vulgar because the colour is making the decisions, it feels vulgar, and that seems to me to be the difference.
via Is Colour Vulgar? (Wed 05 Dec 2012) (*).

Hazelhurst Passageway - Colour - Gymea (Sat 08 Dec 2012)

Not exactly sure what he means by vulgar, but I think the above photos might help understand what he is trying to say, particularly about Black and White / Monochrome. I think colour creates different relationships in the photos where it is used effectively.

Love the way the spot lit Bamboo (* leave shadows are projected onto the passageway wall. These underexposed photos really does not do it justice.

Two Photos - Before Irene - Quebec (Sat 27 Aug 2012)

Two Photos - Before Irene - Quebec (Sat 27 Aug 2012)

We had arrived by bus from Montreal the day before. It was a nice day and there was a Scottish Marching Band Festival on in Quebec. This was the calm before the storm that would come the next day as the tail of Hurricane Irene (*).

Shadows - Sculpture - Rue Sainte-Catherine Est / Montreal (Tue 23 Aug 2011)

Shadows - Sculpture - Rue Sainte-Catherine Est / Montreal (Tue 23 Aug 2011)

Our first night in Montreal after traveling all day by bus from Boston.

Rue Sainte-Catherine Est had been blocked off to traffic for the summer and most restaurants had temporary floor space with tables and seats built out onto the road. There seemed to be some kind of summer festival happening.

Plenty of interesting street art here and the inner city was old and a little bit grungy - in way that made me feel comfortable, just like I feel around the Inner City of Sydney.

We would stay here for another 2 full days before heading to Quebec on the Friday.

Photography is a Game - Joerg Colberg (Fri 17 Aug 2012)

Shadows - Window and Guttering - Prague (Sep 2005)

Joerg Colberg writes (*)..
Photography is a game [..] where the rules aren't always that clear, which is, confusingly, part of what makes it so exciting. It's a game that often is little more than an invitation to come and play and try to figure out the rules as one goes.
Back on the road again.

Pre-dragon boating for me at least. The long shadows and the colours are what make this in my eye.
