On Observervation - Humbled by Beauty - Streetshooter (Mon 11 Aug 2014)

Flower (*) - Madrid (Sun 11 Aug 2013)

Streetshooter (*) writes On being an Observer (*):
find the beauty (*) placed in the garden and nurtured (*) by a higher source (*), the same source (*) that nurtures (*) you, that gives life (*) to all beings. To me, when I see the garden that my wife Tanya works so diligently (*) to make fruitful and beautiful, I am humbled (*).

A beautiful observation.

Making the most of it - Do What You Love (Tue 15 Jul 2014)

Installation - Reina Sofia (*) / Madrid (Sun 11 Aug 2013)

Do What You Love (*) writes:
Having experiences (*) is so important, but having exactly the right experience is not always necessary. [..]

However you feel (*) about your .. [situation] right now, think about how you can make the most of the situation you are in to learn (*) something, try (*) something, or build (*) one more connection (*) before, perhaps, you move on.

On Finding Yourself - Spencer Lum (Tue 08 Jul 2014)

Untitled - Reina Sofia (*) / Madrid (Sun 11 Aug 2013)

Spencer Lum (*) writes On Life (*):
The whole point of life (*) is to figure it out for yourself. To love (*) the challenge (*) and live in the process (*). It can’t flourish in the light (*) of others. Comparison is the surest path (*) to bitterness (*) and grief (*). Explore (*). See your power (*). See what you can do. Success (*) is not being better than everyone else. It’s finding you.
via Living the Better Life (*) by Spencer Lum (*).

Spencer (*) at his Philosophical Best (*). And a great thought for the 1600th post and 146,000th pageview here (*), give or take a couple.

On Photography and Vivian Maier - Ella Taylor (Fri 28 Mar 2914)

Pink Balloon - Madrid (Sun 11 Aug 2013)

Ella Taylor (*) writes On Vivian Maier (*), photography (*) and maybe a few more of us:
Perhaps she just loved taking pictures; perhaps they kept her company or even prevented her, for a while, from falling apart. Perhaps it never crossed her mind that she was an artist.
via 'Vivian Maier' Brings Nanny-Photographer's Life Into Focus (*) by Ella Taylor (*).

In 2010 as I struggled with the loss of Jenny (*), those around me were concerned. So I am thankful to my Mother who suggested I should try to get back into my photography and Jo, who independently, suggested I start to organise my photos. And so I did (*), and still do ..

On Nostalgia - Jorg Colberg (Tue 04 Mar 2014)

Markings - Madrid (Sun 11 Aug 2013)

Jorg Colberg (*) writes more On Nostalgia (*):
the beauty of nostalgia (*):

It’s easy to admire something that was popular in the past (*), because you already know a priori you’re in good company.

In other words, you’re basically putting yourself into a company you admire.

On Photography and Nostalgia - Jorg Colberg (Tue 04 Mar 2014)

Untitled - Madrid (Sun 11 Aug 2013)

Jorg Colberg (*) writes Nostalgia (*):
Photography is the medium of nostalgia (*): any photograph by construction shows us the past (*).

This is a time of nostalgia: regardless of where you look, we have become backwards looking, rehashing what was there in all kinds of ways [..]

We can’t let go of the past because we can’t stand the present (*).

Is that what it is?

On Knowing the Unknown - Jorg Colberg (Fri 14 Feb 2014)

Street Portraits - Madrid / Spain (Sun Aug 11 Aug 2013)

Jorg Colberg (*) writes:
There is comfort in being told what you already know: It essentially tells you that you are right after all (even if you’re not). But there also is a strange kind of comfort in being told what you don’t know (*). You’re challenged (*), it is true, but you’re also being made aware that there are other ways to see the world, that, provided you’re a little open, there is space to grow.

Untitled - Madrid (Sun 11 Aug 2013)

Madrid (*) was just wonderful. It was incredibly hot this particular day (*), being 43 deg C in shade. Luckily for me I don't feel the heat but there is something about Madrid I really love. Maybe one day I will find out what it is. It is staring me right in the face but with most things like that it will hit me when I least expect it.

guertecillo - Calle de Cervante / Madrid (Sun 11 Aug 2013)

The Magpie Press (*) writes on Lope de Vega's House (*):
since I had come across by chance the casa-museo (*) where the playwright Lope de Vega (*) lived from 1610 until his death in 1635, I ventured in to get a glimpse of domestic life in Spain’s theatrical Golden Age. It is a handsome three-storey house with a pretty walled garden which Lope described as his “guertecillo”, his little kitchen garden. It still has an orange, a fig and a pomegranate tree, a covered well, box hedges and a small potager with tomato, pepper and chilli plants.

On Destiny - Chris Horner - Twisted Spoke (Sat 14 Sep 2013)

Bike - GHT / Freedom 2.0 - Madrid (Sat 10 Aug 2013)

Chris Horner (*) talks On Destiny (* | w):
I don’t need any time for this to sink in, I’ve had lots of time to think about it and what this accomplishment would be like, [..] I’ve had lots of time to think about how much I suffered (*) to get here, and the feelings (*) I have now will last a lifetime (*).
via Horner king of Angliru and winner of Vuelta (*) by Twisted Spoke (*).

Congrats to Chris Horner (*) who rolls into Madrid tonight to become the oldest rider to win a modern Grand Tour Cycling Event.

For someone who has assisted so many great riders over the years, he must have known that winning feeling, to stand on the top level of the Podium and to hear his National Anthem, to be the one to receive the accolades.

Everyone at that level in their sport dreams about it and now Chris will be fortunate enough to live it, tonight and for the rest of his life. For one who has pretty much done it his way for most of his career, congrats and enjoy the moment.

Red and Blue on White - Calle de Santa Isabel / Madrid (Sun 11 Aug 2013)

Spent the afternoon at the Museo del Prado (*) and was overloaded with masterpieces from through the centuries.

Francisco Goya (*) was my highlight. His The Dog (*) from the Black Paintings (*) being my favourite. As Robert Hughes said We do not know what it means, but its pathos moves us on a level below narrative.

After the Museum closed, I strolled through the nearby Park, I then wandered the back streets near our Hotel and stumbled across some more recent works (as can be seen above) on the streets of Madrid, not too far from where Goya created his own works over 200 years ago.
