Red and Blue on White - Calle de Santa Isabel / Madrid (Sun 11 Aug 2013)

Red and Blue on White - Calle de Santa Isabel / Madrid (Sun 11 Aug 2013)

Spent the afternoon at the Museo del Prado (*) and was overloaded with masterpieces from through the centuries.

Francisco Goya (*) was my highlight. His The Dog (*) from the Black Paintings (*) being my favourite. As Robert Hughes said We do not know what it means, but its pathos moves us on a level below narrative.

After the Museum closed, I strolled through the nearby Park, I then wandered the back streets near our Hotel and stumbled across some more recent works (as can be seen above) on the streets of Madrid, not too far from where Goya created his own works over 200 years ago.

It's not called Redfern for nothing. Remember, always be nice to a dog.

Neil Armfield by Adam Cullen - National Portrait Gallery / Canberra (Sat 01 Jan 2011)

Neil Armfield by Adam Cullen - National Portrait Gallery / Canberra (Sat 01 Jan 2011)

On our return from Jindabyne for our Annual Walk in the Mountains, we spent a few days in Canberra to celebrate the New Year and to visit the various Galleries. This year I would stay on in Canberra for the Australian Dragon Boat Grand Masters Seclection Camp from 02 to 05 Jan 2011 (see here).

On Sat 01 Jan 2011, we went to the National Portrait Gallery which made it the third time we have been there since the new Gallery opened in late 2008. Jenny was with us for the first visit in early Jan 2009.

The Entrance Hall features new or recently acquired works and this year I was delighted to find the above portrait of Neil Armfield by Adam Cullen. Definitely put a smile on my face when I found Neil's portrait included a yellow dog just like our Gerald (specifically here and here).

Gerald the Dog - Whately Lane / Newtown (Thu 02 Dec 2010)

Gerald the Dog - SLUG - Whateley Lane / Newtown (Thu 02 Dec 2010)

On Wed 01 Dec 2010 I published a post titled ...SUPER SONIC SLUG... where it was observed that SLUG was everywhere.

Had to go to Newtown that evening and in the drizzling rain as I drove down the dark and narrow Whateley Lane between King Street and Wilson Street, I noticed this recent piece by SLUG. Came back early the next morning and the photos below are the result.

The Story of Gerald the Dog starts here back in February 2010. I was aware of the character, but I did not know his name, Gerald, until I saw this Oct 2010 post by the Acid Midget.

Earlier in the year I had noticed quite a big piece (of Gerald) on a large roller door in Buckland Lane, Newtown. I even photographed it with my new mobile phone and it has been my phone's wallpaper ever since. He was a different dog back then. He had yellow skin and was well behaved.

To read in October 2010, the Acid Midget's posts on Gerald was quite funny and put a smile on my face, though I was sorry for the poor pooch's demise. I have always liked dogs and have always tried to be nice towards them and will always say Hello for some reason.

Gerald the Dog - My Phone's Wallpaper ()

Since mid-October, Gerald has been popping up all over Newtown and Enmore and I have taken quite a few photos of poor old Gerald's demise. As the Acid Midget has observed, Gerald has been seriously lead astray in Newtown and his life has gone to the dogs.

Will publish some more photos over the next week or so. Stay tuned ..

Dog UB77 - Newtown (Wed 11 Feb 2004)

Dog UB77 - Newtown - Wed 11 Feb 2004 (picasa)

Following on from yesterday's post featuring a purple and green cat, here is a dog photo.

I drove past this the night before I took the photo. Thought I saw a dog painted on the wall in the darkness and made a note to myself to come back on the way to work the next morning. Surprisingly, in the daylight it revealed itself to me as a ripped poster for a band UB77, I am guessing. For some reason, I have always seen in this photos a dog with attentive ears and a wagging tail.

Favourite Photos - Fowey Cornwall UK 2009 - Bookends of Fowey

Bookends of Fowey - Blue - Fowey / Cornwall (UK) - 09 Sep 2009 (picasa)

One my favourite photos from the trip to Europe in Aug/Sep 2009. Just a really simple photo that uses colour. I could not get my camera out fast enough when I saw the dog and it's blue vest with the blue walls of the Bookends of Fowey Bookshop.

Colour photographs have often been derided by the artists of the photographic community. A real photographer sees and shoots in black and white and the greyscales between (with a quick search I found this excellent blog post - Color Vs. Black and White by Do do doo Art Critique - yes there is more to it all than you think).

To me this photo shows the beauty and simplicity of colour photography. I also like the green fern pots in the top right and the image conforms to an old saying of my Grandmother - 'blue and green can't been without some white in between'

I love using my camera when traveling. After a few days you start to see as your camera would. You are the one who pushes the shutter. Scenes come and go - decisions are made in an instant or sometimes over a longer period - some situations and scenes you miss and some will be captured. Your eye is trained from all your past experiences using a camera as well as the knowledge you have gained from viewing other people's photos and paintings, as well as your readings on all things about photography. After a while you develop your own style and your eye is trained for the present moment to capture a photo using your photographic vision. The photo then becomes part of your future - this post being just one part of it for this particular photograph.

The theme of the past, present and future has come up a few times in the last 4 days. One from a quote from a photographer Nan Goldin from a TV Series titled The Genius Of Photography (better details here). A quote from Nan Goldin's experiences follows:

'As the memory of her sister started to become hazy, Goldin began to take pictures to preserve the present, and thus her fading memories of the past. She photographed her friends so she would never lose the memory of them, as had happened with her sister. Her photographs were her way of documenting their lives, and, in turn, her own.'

The other is from a blog post by Paul Coelho announcing the completion of his new book to be titled The Aleph (the title being inspired by a short story of the same name by Jorge Borges - English translation here). Paul Coelho writes about the book:

'Why did I take so long to write about this pilgrimage? Because it took me three full years to understand it. It is not a travel guide. Of course I describe what does it mean such a long trip in a train, but the main goal is the long trip to my soul, past, present and future.'

Definitely look forward to reading it when it is published here next year.

[Today - Saint Patrick's Day is my 30th Anniversary of employment. Like most anniversaries, I guess it is a day of reflecting on the past, present and future. I have been with the same company all that time - though it's name has changed 4 or 5 time and has become significantly smaller (gone from 13,000 to around 800 employee's). Obviously seen a lot of changes. I have learnt a lot and look forward to getting back to work in a week and a half, after a 3 month break.]

You can recognize a Warrior of the Light by the look in his eye.

You can recognize a Warrior of the Light by the look in his eye. Warriors of the Light are in the world, they form part of the world and they were sent into the world without saddlebags or sandals. They are often cowardly. They do not always act correctly.

Warriors of the Light are wounded by the most foolish things, they worry about trivialities, they believe themselves incapable of growing. Warriors of the Light sometimes believe themselves unworthy of any blessing or miracle.

Warriors of the Light often ask themselves what they are doing here. Often they find their lives meaningless.

That is why they are Warriors of Light. Because they fail. Because they ask questions. Because they keep looking for a meaning. And, in the end, they will find it.

Another passage from Paulo Coelho's - 'The Manual of the Warrior Light'. Just seems appropriate at the moment.
