Same Same but Different - Jason Kottke (Sat 08 Mar 2014)

Space Needle - Seattle Center (Sun 10 Apr 2014)

Jason Kottke (*) writes:
Everything was the same as it was before, except that everything was different. Does that make sense?
via When Kurt met Courtney (*) by Jason Kottke (*).

I flew into Seattle from Sydney on the day that Kurt Cobain's (*) body was found in the loft of his Garage on the shores of Lake Washington. The first I heard of the sad news was on the radio when I woke the next morning in my room of the Seattle Youth Hostel I was staying.

I would wander the streets of Seattle and ride a bike along the shores of Lake Washington the next few days randomly viewing the sights as I have always done. I even attended an impromptu memorial for Kurt Cobain at the Seattle Center a day later. I did not know about it but just stumbled upon it at the early stages.

It was eventful few days in Seattle, I was at the Boeing Production Site in nearby Everett to witness the maiden test flight of a Boeing 777 in the colours of El Al Airlines. To finish it off I would watch a game of Basketball in the same Stadium as Bill Gates. I would almost walk into him as we all the left the Stadium post game, and I mean literal walk into him :-).

I had forgotten about all of this until I read the few words above at kottke.org

The Met - 5th Ave / New York (Mon 15 Aug 2011)

When I took this photo on my recent trip to New York, I had the top photo in mind. Cropped it to get the panorama effect.

Alice in Wonderland - Central Park / New York (Apr 1994/Aug 2011)

Alice in Wonderland - Central Park / New York (Apr 1994)

The above was taken on a disposable panorama format (*) 35mm Kodak camera on my last trip to New York way back in 1994.

Made sure to photograph 'Alice' on my next trip to New York, 17 years later using my little Canon S95 digital camera. Who would have thought 17 years ago that cameras would record photographs in bits and bytes and stored electronically, rather than film.

Alice in Wonderland - Central Park / New York (Mon 15 Aug 2011)

Lots of things have changed in New York and our lives, but some things will always remain the same. These two photos taken 17 years apart are proof of this for sure.

I wonder what future holds for us, particularly with regard to technology. I remember reading a computer magazine on my return flight back to Sydney in 1994, where I read for the first time about and Internet web browser called Mosaic (*), Netscape's predecessor. At the time I was a member of Compuserve, but had never ventured onto the Internet and the world wide web.

I hope it is not another 17 years before I get back New York.

Conservatory Water - Central Park / New York (Apr 1994)

Conservatory Water - Central Park / New York (Apr 1994)

I seemed to have a pretty good feel for using and seeing with a small disposable panorama format (*) 35mm Kodak camera on my last trip to New York way back in 1994 (*).

Had never heard of Ken Duncan (*) back then and I wonder why I even bought a panorama disposable format camera.

Some more panorama format photos to follow (*).
