On Letting Go - Jeremy Rolleston (Mon 13 Jan 2014)

Portrait - Amsterdam (Tue 20 Aug 2013)

Jeremy Rolleston (*) writes On Letting Go (*):
Give up the past (*). We’ve all been hurt, we all [..] made mistakes (*), we’ve all had challenges (*) and faced our own battles (*). But don’t let your past define your future (*). Our background and circumstances may have influenced who we are, but they don’t define our future – we are responsible for who we become and for our own happiness (*).

On Fear and Fearlessness - Jeremy Rolleston / A Life that Counts (Tue 13 Aug 2013)

Poster - Underground / London (Fri 16 Aug 2013)

Jeremy Rolleston (*) and Fearlessness (*):
fearlessness (*) is not the same as the absence of fear (*).

The fearless person is well aware of the fear she faces.

The fear, though, becomes a compass, not a barrier.

It becomes a way to know what to do next, not something that has to be denied or an evil demon to be extinguished.

When we deny our fear, we make it stronger (*). And trying to deny it doesn’t make us fearless (*).

But acknowledging your fear and moving on / choosing a new [brave (*)] mindset (*) is one that permits it to exist without strengthening it or letting it control (*) you.

"What a great event (*) and a great day - a privilege to paddle with you all and a personal highlight.
Thanks .. Geoff"

Jeremy Rolleston (*) writes:
Belief (*) is just one part of the journey (*).

The other half is:
  • determination (*),
  • hard-work,
  • stubborness,
  • perseverence,
  • desire,
  • discipline,
  • training,
  • willingness to critique and learn
  • and so on.
So count the cost before you start and know that when you face obstacles on your path to success, you will no doubt face the cold hard questions.

What will be your answer?

What is a workout? Rob Rowland-Smith - Jeremey Rolleston (Feb 2011)

In his book A Life that Counts, Jeremy Rolleston introduces us to trainer Rob Rowland-Smith. A bit of searching on the Internet and you will find Rob as the SandhillWarrior on Twitter. He certainly impressed Jeremy (as well as me - see here) with his inspirational words and quotes. On pages 136 and 137 of his book, Jeremy quotes Rob's long version of What is a Workout (the short version appeared here a few days ago) as follows:

Here’s a quote by inspirational trainer Rob Rowland-Smith. He wrote it in the context of a workout, but for me, it epitomises the journey, process and outcomes of a committed and disciplined life. I placed it on the front page of my Olympic training folder so I’d read it often, and most times, I read it before I worked out so I’d be better able to discipline myself and work hard enough to achieve what I wanted to achieve during that training session:
"What is a workout?

A workout is 25% perspiration and 75% determination.

Stated another way, it is one part physical exertion and three parts self-discipline.

Doing it is easy once you get started.

A workout makes you better today than you were yesterday.

It strengthens the body, relaxes the mind and toughens the spirit.

When you workout regularly, your problems diminish and your confidence grows.

A workout is a personal triumph over laziness and procrastination.

It is the badge of a winner – the mark of an organised, goal-oriented person who has taken charge of his or her destiny.

A workout is a wise use of time and an investment in excellence.

It is a way of preparing for life's challenges and proving to yourself that you have what it takes to do what is necessary.

A workout is a key that helps unlock the door to opportunity and success.

Hidden within each of us is an extraordinary force.

Physical and mental fitness are triggers that can release it.

A workout is a form of rebirth.

When you finish a good workout, you don’t simply feel better ... you feel better about yourself."
Rob completes this with the following words:
To follow your dreams takes commitment ... and this means discipline.
Some great words here and they will certainly help me focus on what is needed when working towards a Dream.

I have electronic and hardcopy versions of his book - A Life that Counts which was just published in February 2011.

It is a great book. It has reinforced and quantified much of what I have experienced and learnt myself. I have been incredibly lucky to be coached by some amazing people and to be part of some great teams (a glimpse here). More importantly, I have learnt a lot from it as well as being inspired by his words and thoughts (his blog reflects much of the book).

I would recommend and encourage you to obtain a copy. You can have the electronic version (a 1.67MB 227 page full colour PDF) of the book in a matter of minutes for only $US 12.95. The secure form is here. I hope to hear him speak one day.

Our Lives are Moulded and Shaped by Pivotal Experiences - Jeremy Rolleston (Mon 14 Mar 2011)

Whether triumphs or tragedies, our lives are moulded and shaped by pivotal experiences.

Perhaps we receive a long-awaited promotion or we’re suddenly let go from a job. Perhaps a loved one passes away, or a newborn baby enters our lives.

These experiences immerse us in emotions and challenge our convictions.

Oftentimes, we’re defined not so much in the moment of experience itself as in our response to the experience.

Do we quit or rebound? Do we harbour bitterness or choose to forgive? Do we blame or improve?

Whatever the case, the experiences in our lives profoundly touch us.

You're on your own .. you know what you know .. YOU are the one who'll decide where to go. (Dr. Zeuss)

Dare to dream
Dare to fly
Dare to be the ever chosen one to touch the sky
Dare to reach
Dare to rise
Find the strength to set my spirit free
Find the strength to do what I believe

Fingal Beach / Fingal Bay (Sun 25 Aug 2002)

Reading a book today (more at some stage) and came across the phrase Dare to Dream as one of the chapter names.

In the Dare to Dream Chapter, there was a nice quote from a Dr. Zeuss book titled Oh, the Places You'll Go!. Here it is ..

You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes.
You can steer yourself
any direction you choose.
You're on your own.
And you know what you know.
And YOU are the one who'll decide where to go.

Was in the previous post but I thought I would make it a separate post. Just seems really appropriate - who would have thought changing a Facebook Profile Photo would have been so hard to do. I am on my own now and I know what I know which will help me decide where to go.

Dare to Dream - Olivia Newton-John and John Farnham - Openning Ceremony / Sydney 2000 Olympics (Fri 15 Sep 2000)

Reading a book recently (more at some stage) and came across the phrase Dare to Dream as one of the chapter names.

The Dare to Dream phrase made me immediately think of these moments from the Opening Ceremony of the Sydney 2000 Olympics. Heard this song so many times while we were out Homebush during the Olympics. Brings back some great memories. Here are the lyrics (and a high quality recording here).

Dare to Dream Lyrics

I am my own believer
In my heart the reason
I will follow the light from within
I'm not afraid of weakness
I'm gonna taste the sweetness
Of the power not to give in
Oh I will see it through
I believe this is my moment of truth

Dare to dream
Dare to fly
Dare to be the ever chosen one to touch the sky
Dare to reach
Dare to rise
Find the strength to set my spirit free
Dare to dream

I will go the distance
Embrace resistance
I will lay my soul on the line
When the wait is over
And the hunger has spoken
If I give my all, I will shine
Oh I will see it through
I believe, this is my moment of truth

Dare to dream
Dare to fly
Dare to be the ever chosen one to touch the sky
Dare to reach
Dare to rise
Find the strength to set my spirit free
Dare to dream, Oh

And the heart will shine like the sun
A million voices together as one
I believe, I believe, I believe, I believe

Dare to dream
Dare to fly
Dare to be the ever chosen one to touch the sky
Dare to reach
Dare to rise
Find the strength to set my spirit free

Dare to dream
Dare to fly
Dare to be the ever chosen one to touch the sky
Dare to reach
Dare to rise
Find the strength to set my spirit free
(Find the strength to set my spirit free)
Find the strength to do what I believe
(I believe)
Dare To dream
