Intersection - London (May 2009) / Shanghai (Sep 2010)

Intersection - Nanjing Road - Shanghai (Mon 03 May 2010)

Intersection - Southwark Bridge - London (Fri 04 Sep 2009)

These two Intersection photos seem to go together nicely with the red, white, blue and black of the Bollard's, and the white and yellow lines on the bitumen. Ultimately though, it is all about the bikes or lack thereof (there are two in the London photo if you look close enough or three if you count the sign).

Photos: Intersection - Shanghai - May 2010

Intersection - Shanghai - May 2010

Just another intersection photo. Could say there are some Jeffrey Smart influences in seeing this photo. Was firstly, drawn in by the Red Car and Front Red Sign. Then was pleased to see the receding Red Signs as well as the Blue Signs. All came together nicely. The most complicated version of the colour theme photos I have posted so far.

Another and closer view ..

Intersection (1 of 5) - Manhattan Bridge - Dumbo / Brooklyn / New York (Wed 17 Aug 2011)

Intersection (*) (1 of 5) - Manhattan Bridge - Dumbo / Brooklyn / New York (Wed 17 Aug 2011)

The light was magnificent under the less well known Manhattan Bridge. I stayed here a few minutes and photographed a few people as they passed the framed mural.

A little Googling (*) reveals some details of the Mural titled Intersection:
  • Front Street Gets New Mural - 21 Jun 2011 (*)
  • http://intersection-mural.tumblr.com/ (*)
The creators indicate (*):
The mural was designed with site-specific ideas in mind: lines of seven colors meet corrugated vertical bars of the fence behind it. Our concept mimics and bends these lines, creating a colorful graphic symbolizing the constant movement of DUMBO. The design is an abstracted interpretation of intersecting train tracks and the familiar New York City subway map.

The use of vivid colors against the urban backdrop of grays and browns is intended to brighten the landscape and produce a visceral and emotional reaction, while referencing the cross-sections of cultures and people who view it.
From the Wikipedia page Dumbo, Brooklyn (*), Dumbo refers to:
Dumbo, an acronym for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass, is a neighborhood in the New York City, New York, borough of Brooklyn.

It encompasses two sections: one located between the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges, which connect Brooklyn to Manhattan across the East River, and another that continues east from the Manhattan Bridge to the Vinegar Hill area.

The neighborhood is part of Brooklyn Community Board 2.

Jerry Seinfeld once referred to Dumbo on a late-night talk show appearance, joking that it stands for "Down Under Manhattan Bridge," but that New Yorkers arbitrarily added the "O" at the end because they did not want to have a neighborhood called "Dumb."
Learnt about this just now when searching for the name of the large framed Mural on the fence. Learn something everyday.

Another Intersection photo. A variation of this. Enjoy the red poles as well as the people (who look like the poles) waiting at the pedestrian crossing.

Intersection - Tung Chung/Lantau Island/Hong Kong - Mon 26 Jul 2010

Seem to be drawn to Intersections, Pedestrian Crossings, Safey Barriers, Traffic Signs and Road Markings. Saw the above photo while waiting to catch the Cable Car (Ngong Ping 360) to see the Tian Tan Buddha. This is just one of many Intersection photos I have taken over the years. Very Smart like.

Favourite Photos - Intersection - Singapore - Sep 2009

Intersection - Central Boulevard/Raffles Quay - Singapore - Mon 28 Sep 2009 (picasa)

As with most of my Favourite Photos, it just comes down to colour and composition. The yellow lines of the intersection come together to form an apparent big yellow arrow. Like the effect of the painted over lines.

Reminds me of a scene that Jeffrey Smart might paint (examples). I enjoy his work and have a few of his books which have provided much inspiration, particularly while travelling. It is fun to make a photo with good composition and colour, from nothing. Will put up a selection of my favourite Jeffrey Smart influenced photos with time.

Found a couple quotes I liked about Smart's work ..

Indeed, Smart's conception of what he does is thus - "My only concern is putting the right shapes in the right colours in the right places. It is always geometry." [..]

Smart's subject matter is very urban and in many ways, mundane and often bleak, but he treats it in such a way as to make it almost special, using colour and light to make the urban landscapes/objects themselves scapes to be admired for their honesty.

Lots for me to like in this Intersection photo, with the colours standing out, particularly the red/greens, the yellow/blacks and the red/oranges.

Intersection - Victor Hugo Markets - Toulouse - Sep 2009

Like the converging lines of the receding lane way. Really draws the eye in. Easy to find this effect in the narrow streets of Europe. Also like the Victor Hugo Sign on the circular concrete car park ramp. The current Market location was built around the late 1950's.

Taken near the following Intersection Photo (posted 16 Aug 2010). The circular car park ramp can be seen beyond the support of the Red Sign No Entry Sign.

The first steps on the way to and back from Mt Fuji that day. One of the better Intersection photos from the trip. A little bit of rain always helps saturate the colours.

Intersection - Red / Yellow Crossing - Geneva / Switzerland (Fri 19 Aug 2005)

Just another simple Intersection photo - liked the red and yellow combination which seemed to be a Swiss thing. The cracks in the road and tyre marks on the yellow crossings makes this one, for me at least.
