On Photography and Energy - Paul Melcher (Mon 30 Dec 2013)

Portrait - Madrid (Fri 09 Aug 2013)

Paul Melcher (*) writes On Photography (*) and Energy (*):
Every photograph that we take, and share, is energy transfer. We use photography to communicate the energy we originally felt. Great photographs do this extremely well (think of the classics) while others fail miserably. Still others might need additional insider information to be able to achieve their purpose (*) [context (*)]. But all have the same role to play.

Untitled - Madrid (Sun 11 Aug 2013)

Madrid (*) was just wonderful. It was incredibly hot this particular day (*), being 43 deg C in shade. Luckily for me I don't feel the heat but there is something about Madrid I really love. Maybe one day I will find out what it is. It is staring me right in the face but with most things like that it will hit me when I least expect it.

guertecillo - Calle de Cervante / Madrid (Sun 11 Aug 2013)

The Magpie Press (*) writes on Lope de Vega's House (*):
since I had come across by chance the casa-museo (*) where the playwright Lope de Vega (*) lived from 1610 until his death in 1635, I ventured in to get a glimpse of domestic life in Spain’s theatrical Golden Age. It is a handsome three-storey house with a pretty walled garden which Lope described as his “guertecillo”, his little kitchen garden. It still has an orange, a fig and a pomegranate tree, a covered well, box hedges and a small potager with tomato, pepper and chilli plants.

On Training and Discipline - Siegfried Hansen / Eric Kim Street Photography (Wed 18 Dec 2013)

Untitled - Pitt Street / Sydney (Wed 18 Dec 2013)

Siegfried Hansen (*) writes On Traininng (*) and Discipline (*):
There are many things you learn by training (*) and discipline (*), but overall you should internalize both theory (*) and technique (*) to a point that you can fully concentrate (*) on the moment when taking pictures. I navigate through [..] my hometown, almost blindly (*) on certain routes, focusing on things that are happening around me. It’s all coincidental, nothing is preset.

On Photography, Context and Meaning - Jorg Colberg / (Sun 15 Dec 2013)

Untitled - Oxford Street / London (Sat 17 Aug 2013)

Jorg Colberg (*) writes On Photography (*), Context (*) and Meaning (*):
Photographs need to be seen with context in mind. Many photographs are created with a very specific context in mind [..] But context can also be an anchor that prevents access. [..] [some] speak directly to us; many of them escape their context and talk of the human condition [..] these photographs show what happens when a master photographer sets up her or his camera: The results will stand the test of time and, inevitably, they will want to break out of whatever context they might have found themselves originally in.

On Effort and Coaching - Dan Coyle (Fri 13 Dec 2013)

Blackwattle Bay / Sydney (Sun 07 Jul 2013)

Dan Coyle (*) writes On Effort (*) and On Coaching (*):
I think the lessons for teachers and coaches are pretty simple:
  • First, connect: like John Wooden said, they can’t care (*) how much you know (*) until they know how much you care (*).

  • Highlight the group: seek ways (traditions, mantras, fun little rituals) to show what it means to belong in your crew.

  • Don’t soft-pedal high standards. Don’t pretend that it’s easy — do the opposite.

  • Emphasize the toughness (*) of the task, and your belief (*) that they have what it takes.
via The Simple Phrase that Increases Effort 40% (*) by Dan Coyle (*).

I think Dan is exactly right. I have been fortunate enough to experience this time and time again in my paddling.

On Archiecture - I believe - José Antonio Coderch (1960)

Untitled - Alexandria (Wed 04 Dec 2013)

José Antonio Coderch (*) writes On Architecture (*):
I believe (*) that a new and authentic living tradition of works will be born, which can be diverse in many aspects, but which will have been brought about by a deep knowledge (*) of the fundamentals (*), and with a great awareness (*), without worrying about the final result (*), which, fortunately, escapes us in every case and isn't an end in itself, but a consequence.

On Fear - Seth Godin (Wed 04 Dec 2013)

A bit of a balancing act - Shadow - Alexandria (Wed 04 Dec 2013)

Seth Godin (*) writes On Embracing Fear (*):
It's okay to be nervous (*). Instead of fighting (*) that anxiety (*), dance (*) with it. Welcome it. Relish it. It's a sign (*) you're on to something. [..] This is important after all.

When we welcome a feeling like this, when we embrace (*) it and actually look forward (*) to it, the feeling (*) doesn't get louder and more debilitating (*). It softens, softens to the point where we can work with it.

Use your fear (*) like fuel (*).
