[..] to get a richer experience listening to music, focus on listening to the bass (not the treble).
via Listening to the Bass in Street Photography (*) by Eric Kim (*).
One of the highlights from last years trip to Europe (*) was meeting up with Uwe (*) again. It was pleasure to watch and hear him play this challenging bass sequence.
I have always heard and felt the bass (*) in music. Maybe I see it in my photography as Eric points out in his post (*)? Also hope to one day learn how to play the bass, but only a 4 string for me. Uwe has already given me a few tips to get started.
A pretty random post, but it has put a smile on my face and was fun to put together.
Heard this song on the radio on the way to training yesterday evening. It's a song you will often hear on the radio on a stormy afternoon or evening.
The storm clouds were looming as we got closer to Bank Street and it had started to lightly rain. The wind came up and the air became colder, and in combination with the songs haunting lyrics, driving beat of the bass and drums, and the memories it evoked, it made me tingle and I was covered in goose bumps.
The music and lyrics seem to capture the feelings and mental images that I carry with me, to be and feel Australian.
I guess that's all reasonably vague, but feelings for me are difficult to describe - much in the same way Dennis Denuto demonstrates so passionately, yet unconvincingly, in the classic Australian Movie The Castle:
It's the vibe of the thing, your Honour.
The vibe or the gist are terms I use a lot to cover for my inability to express my feelings or what I am thinking :-) Dennis is my hero. Here he is at his definitive best:

Some random memories. The song goes back to 1982, which would have been my last year of full-time uni. I did see The Flowers (Iva Davies predecessor to Icehouse) at the University Union in the 2nd Term of 1980 and then a few weeks later back in Wagga Wagga for the University Holidays. Was excited to have some friends, from my school days in Wagga Wagga, to be the local supporting act. For some reason I asked Jenny whether we could have the song played at our Wedding Reception. She liked it and it was played during the night and as a filler as we said our farewells at the end of the evening. It was put on repeat as I we took a lot longer than we had planned.
Great Southern Land Lyrics
Standing at the limit of an endless ocean Stranded like a runaway, lost at sea City on a rainy day, down in the harbor Watching as the gray clouds shadow the bay
Looking everywhere 'cause I had to find you This is not the way that I remember it here Anyone will tell you, it's a prisoner island Hidden in the summer for a million years
Great southern land Burned you black
So you look into the land and it will tell you a story Story 'bout a journey ended long ago If you listen to the motion of the wind in the mountains Maybe you can hear them talking like I do "They're gonna betray you, they're gonna forget you Are you gonna let them take you over that way"
Great southern land, great southern land You walk alone like a primitive man And they make it work with sticks and bones See their hungry eyes, it's a hungry home
I hear the sound of the stranger's voices I see their hungry eyes, their hungry eyes Great southern land, great southern land They burned you black, black against the ground
Standing at the limit of an endless ocean Stranded like a runaway, lost at sea City on a rainy day, down in the harbor Watching as the gray clouds shadow the bay
Looking everywhere 'cause I had to find you This is not the way that I remember it here Anyone will tell you, it's a prisoner island Hidden in the summer for a million years
Great southern land, in the sleeping sun You walk alone with the ghost of time They then burned you black, black against the ground And they make it work with rocks and sand
I hear the sound of the stranger's voices I see their hungry eyes, their hungry eyes Great southern land, great southern land You walk alone, like a primitive man
You walk alone with the ghost of time And they burned you black Yeah, they burned you black Great southern land Great southern land Great southern land Great southern land
You might be able to guess why I picked this particular youtube clip of Great Southern Land. Two weeks to Nationals. Canberra here we come .. really looking forward to the racing with my team mates and catching up with all our friends from right across Australia.

Always wanted to learn how to play the Bass Guitar - this is definitely a classic song for budding bass players (see here), and for me (in particular), Ceremony by New Order and Afterglow by INXS. Did a lot of reading up on the Bass Guitar during Jenny's last stay in the Hospital. She encouraged me to give it a try. Maybe one day ..
Thought about this song last night when we talked about the "Wandering Mind" and "Pressure" during racing at our Outrigger Catch Up Dinner. Hopefully will find some time to put up some good links/quotes that I have on the topic.
Have to admit I have always had a bit of a school boy crush on Annie Lennox from her days in the late 70's band, The Tourists. In this tribute performance she looks remarkably like Natalie Portman in her role as Nina in Black Swan.
Under Pressure - Lyrics
Pressure pushing down on me Pressing down on you no man ask for Under pressure - that burns a building down Splits a family in two Puts people on street
It's the terror of knowing What this world is about Watching some good friends Screaming let me out Pray tomorrow - gets me higher Pressure on people - people on streets
Chippin' around - kick my brains around the floor These are the days it never rains but it pours People on streets - people on streets
It's the terror of knowing What this world is about Watching some good friends Screaming let me out Pray tomorrow - gets me higher Pressure on people - people on streets
Turned away from it all like a blind man Sat on a fence but it don't work Keep coming up with love but it's so slashed and torn
Why - why - why Love
Insanity laughs under pressure we're cracking Can't we give ourselves one more chance Why can't we give love Cos love's such an old fashioned word And love dares you to care for The people on the edge of the light And love dares you to change our way of Caring about ourselves This is our last dance This is our last dance This is ourselves Under pressure Under pressure Pressure
In June 2007 just after I had been selected in the Australian Masters Dragon Boat Team, I bought an MP3 player to use at the Gym while I trained. Did not have any music CD's, so one night after training I wandered into a Music Store in King Street Newtown. Was not looking for anything in particular, but I noticed a Double CD Set by New Order and bought a copy on pure speculation.
When I listened to the songs, I was familiar with quite a few of them. One song I had not heard of was Ceremony. I was instantly drawn to the song. It has a complicated history which you can follow on wikipedia. I love the bass guitar that drives the song. The lyrics are a bit of a mystery to me, but I guess like most things you can make it mean what you want for you. My feeling is that you need to have an understanding of the life and death of the song's author, Ian Curtis and the band Joy Division, the predecessor to New Order. A sad story really.
It's almost 4 years since I first heard the song, but I still enjoy it as much as the first time I heard it.
There are many Ceremony Videos on Youtube. I picked the one above because I liked the video. It reminded me of my time in London and a Park (Grosvenor Square which featured in Episode 8 of Series 7 of Spooks I had seen a month early back in Sydney - I recognised the Park instantly from the Spooks Episode) I sat in before I went to see the Murray Fredericks Exhibition in Mayfair. I have a few photos I might dig out of the archives.
Ceremony
This is why events unnerve me, Define it all, a different story, Notice whom for wheels are turning, Turn again and turn towards this time, All she ask's the strength to hold me, Then again the same old story, Word will travel, oh so quickly, Travel first and lean towards this time.
Oh, I'll break them down, no mercy shown, Heaven knows, it's got to be this time, What she heard, these things she said, The times she cried, Too frail to wake this time.
I break them down, no mercy shown, Heaven knows, it's got to be this time, Avenues all lined with trees, Picture me and then you start watching, Watching forever, forever, Watching love grow, forever, Letting me know, forever.
"Lyrically I was looking for something that deals quite generically with the sense of loss. But not in a depressing sense. It could be about a family member, someone close, [..] it could be about loss of any kind. I really wanted to convey a recognition of coming to terms with that loss in a positive way and remembering someone with immense affection. Initially the loss makes you sad, but then you feel that glow of warmth and I think this is something everyone can relate to."
Here I am, Lost in the light of the moon, That comes through my window.
Bathed in blue, The walls of my memory divides, The thorns from the roses. It's you and the roses.
[CHORUS] Touch me and I will follow, In your afterglow. Heal me from all this sorrow, As I let you go. I will find my way When I see your eyes, Now I'm living, In your afterglow.
Here I am, Lost in the ashes of time, But who wants tomorrow, In between, Longing to hold you again, I'm caught in your shadow. I'm losing control.
My mind drifts away, We only have today.
[CHORUS] Touch me and I will follow,
In your afterglow. Heal me from all this sorrow, As I let you go. I will find my way, I will sacrifice, 'Til the blinding day, When I see your eyes.
Now I'm living, In your afterglow [in your afterglow]. When the veils are gone, As I let you go, As I let you go.
[CHORUS] Touch me and I will follow, In your afterglow. Heal me from all this sorrow, As I let you go. I will find my way I will sacrifice, Now I'm living, In your afterglow.
Bathed in blue, The walls of my memory divides, The thorns from the roses. It's you who is closest.
