Pink Ribbon Lunch - Sydney Breast Cancer Foundation (12 Oct 2004)
As was recently mentioned in our presentation at the Dragons Abreast Australia's Seminar in Brisbane, Jenny's first ever talk was at the Sydney Breast Cancer Foundation's Pink Ribbon Lunch on the 12 Oct 2004. It was just a few days before we all flew out to Shanghai for the 2004 World Dragon Boat Championships. Jenny and Jo were going as competitors, and myself as a supporter and photographer (my paddling career was yet to be launched, though I knew at that stage I wanted to get more involved).
I remember Jenny writing the speech late one night well in advance of the Lunch. I can remember hearing Jenny's fingers tapping away on the keyboard as I nodded off to sleep. The words came fast and naturally, and the speech was ready with a few minor modifications. It would become the basis for all the talks that followed. Jenny would often be asked to give talks and she also became a Speaker for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
The Pink Ribbon Lunch was hosted by Angela Bishop and the Governor of NSW, Marie Bashir, was the special guest.
Jenny did a great job and touched all with her talk. Jenny and Joanne were both presented with a beautiful bunch of flowers. I videoed Jenny's talk. Must dig it out and have a look at it at some stage.

After the Lunch, we walked back through Hyde Park North to view the photos in the Sydney Life 2004 Exhibition. I will put some of my photos up in the next couple of posts, since it is now Sydney Life time of the year.

Sydney Life 2004 (5-24 Oct 2004)
This is the third year of this exciting large-scale photographic exhibition in Hyde Park. The reasons for its success and popularity are many. The elegant main avenure of Hyde Park, with its arching trees, makes for an inspiring natural gallery. Placing art in this iconic Sydney setting encourages passers-by to linger that little bit longer.
The photographers have embraced the opportunity to have their images exhibited in this remarkable large scale on canvas form. The City of Sydney's decision to award a first prize of $5,000 has given further strength to the exhibition. This year sees a higher percentage of established and well-known photographers, as well as younger photographers.
In choosing the images for Sydney Life, we looked for unique and truthful statements that reflect Sydney diversity and vitality as a City. The 26 striking and varied images, are proof of the fascinating place in which we work, live and play.
I would like to thank all the photographers who contributed their vision and the City of Sydney for their support and belief in this unique project.

This large scale photographic exhibition displayed along the central walkway of Hyde Park creates an open-air gallery against the leafy backdrop of the Park.
Twenty-six photographs have been chosen from 1400 entries ot create an impressive visual experience reflecting the diversity and uniqueness of Sydney Life.
The City of Sydney Photography Prize: For the first time, a $5,000 prize will be awarded to the most outstanding work, judged by a panel of distinguished judges, including Anne Zahalka (renowned Sydney-based photomedia artist), Karra Rees (Project Manager, Australian Centre for Photography) and Steven Lojewski (documentary photographer and Senior Lecturer in photomedia, Sydney College of the Arts)

This large format photographic exhibition, displayed along the central walkway of Hyde Park North, creates an open air gallery against the leafy backdrop of the park.
Twenty six photographic images have been selected from the over six hundred entries, to create an impressive visual experience reflecting on Sydney - its mood, vitality and environment.
After the outstanding response to last year's Sydney Looking Forward exhibition, I am delighted to curate this second exhibition in Hyde Park, which is like a natural gallery amongst the trees.
Once again, the work of both emerging and established photographers sit comfortably alongside each other, creating a vibrant portrait of Sydney as a unique and dynamic place.
Photographers were asked to portray both the physical and cultural makeup of the city in a positive way by selecting images using unusual colour and light. Images were also chosen for their uniqueness and for the way they reflected a contemporary historical moment.

Photos: La Perouse (Dec 2004)
[ A repost of an earlier photo. Just stumbled across some photos that I took at the scene and thought it be interesting to look at them again. ]
Another scan of a 4x5 inch transparency taken with my Shen Hao HZX 4X5-IIA Large Format Camera (more here). Was really happy to get everything right here - exposure, camera movements and time of day. Again the detail in the transparency is incredible.
Some photos of the setup and scene follow and were taken with a Canon 300D using RAW Mode. Late afternoon sun created the extended shadows of the tripod. The white light balance, probably needs some adjusting. Highlights the magenta cast that is typical of the provia transparency used.
