On Letting Go - Spencer Lum / Ground Glass (Wed 30 May 2012)

Joanne - Haute-Pyrenees (Tue 22 Sep 2009)

Spencer Lum (*) writes (*) ..
Be willing to give up yesterday. Let go of [..] Stay out of your comfort zone. Make room for tomorrow’s you. Opportunity is limitless, but time is preciously limited. Don’t rest on laurels and past achievement. Let every day be its own. Because if it is all about journey, there really is no point of arrival, and there is no place to be. There is just getting up and giving it a go.

Water - Lac Nere / Haute-Pyrenees / France (Tue 22 Sep 2009)

At the far end of a long walk, we sit by this beautiful lake in the middle of nowhere. The water was incredibly clear. We scattered some of Jenny's Ashes here so we will always remember this day and place.

The Pathway to an Olympic Dream - Drew Ginn (Sun 28 May 2012)

Gondola's - Venice (Tue 15 Sep 2009)

Drew Ginn shares some thoughts (*) about where he and his team are at after just being beaten last Sunday by the Great Britian Four in Switzerland ..
The pathway forward is going to take us into the unknown. Being comfortable with the greyness and the isolation will be key.

Grey because often our reserves will be low and our capacities will be stretched.

The isolation comes as it can get lonely when we strive, uncompromisingly towards a moment. A moment that many won't understand and we will find hard to translate or explain.

To engage in making four athletes one, in taking things further, faster, and beyond our wildest imaginings will have us questioning, doubting and fearful at times.

The Target - The Way of the Bow / Paulo Coelho

Mod Gnome - King Street / Newtown (Fri 19 Feb 2010)

From Paulo Coelho's (*) short story, The Way of the Bow (*)..
The Target

The target is the objective to be reached.

It was chosen by the archer and though it is a long way off, we cannot blame it when we fail to hit it.

In this lies the beauty of the way of the bow: you can never excuse yourself by saying that your opponent was stronger than you.

You were the one who chose the target and you are responsible for it.

The target can be larger, smaller, to the right or the left, but you always have to stand before it, respect it and bring it closer mentally.

Only when it is at the very end of your arrow should you release the bow-string.

If you view the target as the enemy, you might well hit the target, but you will not improve anything inside yourself.

You will go through life trying only to place an arrow in the centre of a piece of paper or wood, which is absolutely pointless. And when you are with other people, you will spend your time complaining that you never do anything interesting.

That is why you must choose your target, do your best to hit it, and always regard it with respect and dignity; you need to know what it means and how much effort, training and intuition was required on your part.

When you look at the target, do not concentrate on that alone, but on everything going on around it, because the arrow, when it is shot, will encounter factors you failed to take into account, like wind, weight, distance.

You must understand the target. You need to be constantly asking yourself:
'If I am the target, where am I? How would it like to be hit, so as to give the archer the honour he deserves?'
The target only exists if the archer exists. What justifies its existence is the desire of the archer to hit it, otherwise it would be a mere inanimate object, an insignificant piece of paper or wood.

Just as the arrow seeks the target, so the target also seeks the arrow, because it is the arrow that gives meaning to its existence; it is no longer just a piece of paper; for an archer, it is the centre of the world

The Arrow - The Way of the Bow / Paulo Coelho

Directional Arrow - Avenue du Mont-Royal / Montreal (Thu 25 Aug 2011)

From Paulo Coelho's (*) short story, The Way of the Bow (*)..
The Arrow

The arrow is the intention.

It is what unites the strength of the bow with the centre of the target.

The intention must be crystal-clear, straight and balanced. Once the arrow has gone, it will not come back, so it is better to interrupt a shot, because the movements that led up to it were not sufficiently precise and correct, than to act carelessly, simply because the bow was fully drawn and the target was waiting.

But never hold back from firing the arrow if all that paralyses you is fear of making a mistake. If you have made the right movements, open your hand and release the string. Even if the arrow fails to hit the target, you will learn how to improve your aim next time.

If you never take a risk, you will never know what changes you need to make.

Each arrow leaves a memory in your heart, and it is the sum of those memories that will make you shoot better and better.
Plenty of great metaphors for our life experiences here.

Late returning from Batemans Bay to Sydney after visiting my Aunt Erica on Saturday and taking in some of the local sights to the south of Batemans Bay on Sunday.

Being a bit late, we decided to eat off the Main Road and try our luck with dinner in Kiama, which has been bypassed for quite a few years now. Not much has changed at Loui's and much of the original charm remains. A scene like this does not present itself very often and I could not resist the opportunity to make the above photos plus a few more.

Grilled Barramundi for Joanne and David, and a Hamburger for me. To finish, a plate of Baklava, Turkish delight and Shortbread with our Coffee's and Joanne's Green Tea.

With Erica (2 of 2) - Breakfast - Glebe Deli (Thu 17 May 2012)

Erica is my Aunty and was my Father's younger sister. She lives just outside of Batemans Bay and owns and operates a 2nd Hand Book Store called the Batehaven Book Exchange (*). She is in Sydney for some medical scans and arrived in from Perth yesterday after spending a week with her 3 week old Grandson, Alex.

Not exactly High Tea at the Ritz (where I am constantly reminded that my late younger brother Tim took her) but the Glebe Cafe is my favourite cafe at the moment. Due to the scans, vegemite on white toast and black tea for Erica today. She loves animals and books, and tells a great story and never forgets a fact or detail. She is the Family Historian on my Father's side of the Family.

Good Luck with the scans Aunty Erica.

New series, titled and labelled With (*), of portrait photos of family and friends as I sit across from them at local cafes and restaurants. Will try to use my Canon S95 with available light.

Need Your Love - Temper Trap / Studio Session / YouTube

Need Your Love (*) - Temper Trap (*) (Fri 27 Apr 2012)

Heard this recently a couple of times on the car radio traveling to training sessions. Been a while since I have heard something new that I have liked. The start creates a sense of anticipation and the song has an urgency about it. A couple of the lyrics that appealed (and I used to search for the song online) are bolded. Picked this video as I appreciate watching musicians performing.

Need Your Love Lyrics

The road is pulling me into her open where
And for a moment I escape and I forget
The silhouettes behind the dust clouds call me friend
But even fools know here they’re far a few between
She has abandoned me on highways and desert plates
Of lonely creatures singing for the summer rain
And at the end of all your knees fall down to me
Yeah it’s something in you always ask for someone real

Oh I need your love, I need your love,
I need you now, I need you
Oh I need your love, I need your love,
I need you now, I need you

She is my salvation in the dark
But at night with lips of honey calls the devil’s heart
And I am a war of flesh and heart that’s left undone
Between the person that I was and have become

Oh I need your love, I need your love,
I need you now, I need you
Oh I need your love, I need your love,
I need you now, I need you
I need your love

Oh I need your love, I need your love,
I need you now, I need you
Oh I need your love, I need your love,
I need you now, I need you

There’s no resting in my heart
There’s no resting in my heart
There’s no resting now

On Obliquity - The Bullet Proof Musician (Sun 06 May 2012)

Joanne and Jenny (looking back) - Jungfrau / Switzerland (Wed 17 Aug 2005)

Dr. Noa Kageyama (*) writes (*) on obliquity (*):
See what happens when you focus more on making yourself happy with your performances, and being less concerned with trying to gauge what others may or may not think. Start small if need be, and in low-pressure situations to begin with, but then expand the experiment as you gain confidence and trust in yourself.
Well worth the read and something to remember.

Lucky I photographed this when I did - about 7am Fri morning before work, as the small shed was painted clean later that day. Won't take long for something new to be painted on this surface. The Koala had painted over some other piece of graffiti that I can't quite make out.
