On Empathy - Seth Godin (Wed 12 Aug 2015)

Music - Circular Quay (Sun 09 Aug 2015)

Seth Godin on Empathy:

Empathy doesn't involve feeling sorry for someone. It is our honest answer to the question, "why did they do what they did?" [..]

Dismissing actions we don't admire merely because we don't care enough to have empathy is rarely going to help us make the change we seek. It doesn't help us understand, and it creates a gulf that drives us apart.

On Vivian Maier - Naomi Cass / Andrew Stephens (Sat 04 Oct 2014)

Street Portrait - Valletta / Malta (Sun 21 Sep 2014)

Andrew Stephens (*) writes on Vivian Maier (*):
the almost magical appearance of Maier's work, as if it had been conjured, has not only inspired much further creativity and contemplation about the nature of photography, it has also shown how their own interests and approaches have crossed paths with Maier's.
Naomi Cass (*) expands Vivian Maier (*) Influence (*) on the Past (*), Present (*) and Identity (*):
We always need to think of a way of activating the past with respect to the present. We couldn't assume Maier to have had an influence on contemporary practice, however all the artists in this exhibition are acutely aware of not just her work but the complexity of her identity.
via Maier's portraits are an unexpected gift (*) by Andrew Stephens (*).

A great article and probably the most interesting I have read on Vivian Maier (*). Her work has become well known and her influence is expanding into interesting and diverse areas of the art world.

On Influences - Joe Newman (Wed 10 Sep 2014)

Red - Venice (Tue 09 Sep 2014)

Joe Newman (*) writes on our Influences (*):
our influences are more than just what artists we've studied or admired. We all bring our own personal experiences, biases and values to our photographs, whether it's a conscious effort or not.

On Photography - Michael Ernest Sweet (Tue 02 Sep 2014)

Untitled - Venice (Tue 09 Sep 2014)

Michael Ernest Sweet (*) writes on Photography (*):
When I look at one of my photographs, I do not see what you see. I see the moment on the street where I made the photograph and I feel into that experience. Simply put, I do not see objectively (*) - my viewing is subjective (*).
via Joel Meyerowitz and Twelve Other Street Photographers on Their Best Photographs (*) by Michael Ernest Sweet (*).

On Vivian Maier - Tim Belden (Mon 15 Sep 2014)

Street Portrait (*) - Westminster Bridge / London (Sun 14 Sep 2014)

Tim Belden (*) writes on Vivian Maier (*):
Vivian is like anybody who gets intensely into an art form. She went to museums, saw other photographers, but was never schooled or trained. So she took the best of what she saw, internalized it, and then she worked obsessively.
via Vivian Maier | September 2014 Notables (*) by Tim Belden (*).

Westminster Bridge had been closed for the final stage of the 2014 Tour of Great Britain. The Teams had used the Bridge to park the their buses and the crowds were allowed to mingle and walk along the Bridge. The sun was low and as it usual does at that of the day, had broken through, and those walking back to Westminster Tube Station were beautifully lit. I love the detail of the face and the shadow of his chin. This is my favourite. Maybe Vivian Maier (*) has been a role model to me. Thinking about it, I should definitely think so.

Untitled - Oxford Street / London (Sun 18 Aug 2013)

Trent Parke (*) writes On The Photographic Process (*) and Disocvery (*):
Question everything. Make work that is meaningful to you. Take time.

I have always found that mistakes and accidents usually lead to the best discoveries.

On the Humanities - Robert Heinlein / AthanasiusKircher / Slashdot (Fri 02 May 2014)

Street Portrait - Barcelona (Tue 06 Aug 2013)

Robert Heinlein (*) is quoted (*):
Whatever our calling, whether we are scientists, engineers, poets, public servants, or parents, we all live in a complex, and ever-changing world, and all of us deserve what's in this toolbox: critical thinking skills; knowledge (*) of the past (*) and other cultures (*); an ability to work with and interpret numbers and statistics; access to the insights of great writers and artists; a willingness to experiment, to open up to change (*); and the ability to navigate ambiguity (*).

An Apple - Ealing / London (Thu 14 Aug 2013)

Jorg Colberg (*) writes On Learning (*):
If apples are like apples, and oranges and like oranges, what can we learn (*) from comparing apples and oranges?
via The Photobook: A History Volume III by Martin Parr and Gerry Badger (*) by Jorg Colberg (*).

Thanks Jorg. I have really been looking for a reason to post this photo of an apple which had fallen from the apple tree in Eileen's (*) backyard.

On Gestures - Jorg Colberg / Conscientious Photography Magazine (Tue 28 Jan 2014)

Untitled - Oxford Street / London (Sat 17 Aug 2013)

Jorg Colberg (*) writes On Gestures (*) and Photography (*):
Gestures (*), the way people use their hands (*) and facial expressions (*), are very hard to deal with photographically.

One of the complications appears to be that the moment we are made to look at a gesture (*), frozen in a photograph, we have to pay attention to something we usually do not think about.

And then it gets weird very quickly.

Keeping in Shape - Eric Kim (Fri 04 Jan 2014)

street portrait - Lisbon (Wed 14 Aug 2013)

Eric Kim (*) writes On Photography (*):
taking photos is like training a muscle. You need to do it consistently to keep it fit and in shape. And even more important is to keep your eyes sharp and ready to look for photographs.

Street Portraits (1 of 3) - Hvar / Hvar / Croatia (Wed 31 Jul 2013)

Street Portraits (1 of 3) - Hvar Ferry Terminal / Hvar / Croatia (Wed 31 Jul 2013)

Love watching people. Easy to capture these moments. Cameras everywhere, so no one seems to really be too concerned, even if they realise they are being photographed. These were taken as we disembarked our Ferry which took us to Hvar from Split. The light and colour in Croatia is amazing - even during the midday sun. A few more to follow.
