Two Photos - New York (Aug 2011)
Have started to print a few photos from the recent trip to New York (*) and have put them on the floor to look at and shuffle around. These two seem to talk to each other in way I had not connected until printing them.
The intersection photo is one of my favourites and it reminds me of Trent Parke's (*) famous intersection photo (*).
Fun to start relating the photos like this and will put a few more here.

Alice in Wonderland - Central Park / New York (Apr 1994/Aug 2011)
The above was taken on a disposable panorama format (*) 35mm Kodak camera on my last trip to New York way back in 1994.
Made sure to photograph 'Alice' on my next trip to New York, 17 years later using my little Canon S95 digital camera. Who would have thought 17 years ago that cameras would record photographs in bits and bytes and stored electronically, rather than film.
Lots of things have changed in New York and our lives, but some things will always remain the same. These two photos taken 17 years apart are proof of this for sure.
I wonder what future holds for us, particularly with regard to technology. I remember reading a computer magazine on my return flight back to Sydney in 1994, where I read for the first time about and Internet web browser called Mosaic (*), Netscape's predecessor. At the time I was a member of Compuserve, but had never ventured onto the Internet and the world wide web.
I hope it is not another 17 years before I get back New York.

Conservatory Water - Central Park / New York (Apr 1994)
I seemed to have a pretty good feel for using and seeing with a small disposable panorama format (*) 35mm Kodak camera on my last trip to New York way back in 1994 (*).
Had never heard of Ken Duncan (*) back then and I wonder why I even bought a panorama disposable format camera.
Some more panorama format photos to follow (*).

Street Scene - Prince Street / SoHo / New York (Thu 18 Aug 2011)
The mid afternoon light on the northern side of the street was quite soft, much less contrasty than I'm used to back home in Sydney. The light was beautiful here and I took quite a few photographs, so there might be a few more to come.
Saw the following photo by Jan Meissner (*) last week from here (*) where the work was described by Nick Turpin (*) as:
graphic color scenes of the New York sidewalk often take parallel to the buildings which had a continuity of approachWhen I saw the photo I felt I had seen something similar. If you look at both closely they are the same street. Small world.

Tracks - Av de la Grande Amdee / Paris (Tue 24 Aug 2005)
This style of photo was inspired by Andreas Gursky's (*) Rhine II (*) - see below - which I had been impressed by in my early photography days. I have a few variations of this and will put them here when I have time to find them.
Rhine II (*) recently sold (*) for a record $4.2 million.
Robert McFarlane (*) recently described (*) Rhine II (*) ..
"It's very simple, very graphic. In a funny way it makes you contemplate the very ordinary moments in your life,"A nice way to look at my own humble efforts.
Some interesting discussion and videos from here (*).

Water - Ligurian Sea - Cinque Terre / Italy (Fri 12 Aug 2005)
If you look hard in the top left hand corner you will see a small boat - the traditional tiny figure in the landscape.
Found this great little quote yesterday which seems right for this photo ..
"You can't cross the sea merely by standing and staring at the water (*)"

Fix You - Coldplay - Late Show with David Letterman (Tue 20 Sep 2011)
Was watching this Paradise Clip (*) of Coldplay playing Live on Letterrman and found that they played a few more songs (*), including this one. Will always remember watching this clip (*) of Chris Martin on Extras (*), with Jenny and Jo, which I had recorded on my PVR.
Fix You Lyrics
[..] And the tears come streaming down your face
When you lose something you can't replace
When you love someone but it goes to waste
Could it be worse?
Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you [..]
Tears stream down your face
When you lose something you cannot replace
Tears stream down your face
And I . . .
Tears stream down your face
I promise you I will learn from my mistakes
Tears stream down your face
And I . . .
A Goodbye - Peel Subway Station / Montreal (Wed 24 Aug 2011)
Joel Meyerowitz (*) describes in his YouTube video (*) on Street Photography (*) ..
So the idea is to walk and watch what is happening in any crowd and see if there is an interaction.
A gesture or a hug or kiss or goodbye.
Something that is a significant gesture that makes it interesting for people to look at in a photograph.

Intersection - S Ashley St / Tampa (Mon 08 Aug 2011)
Walking back to the Hotel at the end of the last day of the Regatta, I saw this scene and captured this photo. To me it marked the end of the campaign (*) and maybe the directional arrows on the road meant something to me as I pondered the reality of my experience in Tampa.
Almost 3 months later I have had plenty of time to reflect on my - our - experience and I move forward enjoying my paddling.
I just read the following quote by Kirk Tuck (*) in a great article (*) about doing the things you love ..
Intention? That has to come from you. But I would suggest that, as a functional person, you no doubt find things in life that spark you up. Give you pleasure, satisfaction, happiness. That inflate your will to live. Distill down to those things and make them the base of your art. Then the intention will drive everything else. From Developing muscle memory and fluid technique is almost as important as developing a sense of purpose (Kirk Tuck - Wed 28 Sep 2009) (*).
It is a great article (*) from a great blog - The Visual Science Blog / Kirk Tuck (*). Not a bad way to look at things.
