Syke 5 - Station Street / Enmore (Mon 15 Nov 2010)

Stumbled across another Syke piece this morning. Love the way the paint drips down the wall. This piece was done in 2008. It has a quote from the poem Howl by Allen Ginsberg

Australian Stencil Art Prize: Dress ups put sYKe in running - 01 Oct 2010

THE work of street artist sYKe can easily be found around Newtown and in clubs and cafes in the city.

But the 23-year-old is now being recognised for her work on canvas, after being named a finalist in the Australian Stencil Art Prize earlier this month.

The Newtown artist’s piece Cowboys and Indians was created after spending time in a photo-booth dressed up in a wild west theme. SYKe transformed the photos into stencils, putting them on to four canvases to create a 2m-long artwork.

"I have been doing a series of those (photo booth prints) and pasting them around town," she said. "I spent about three to four days on this one because I was playing around with techniques and experimenting a bit more with what I wanted."

She is one of 20 finalists whose work will be shown in the Oh Really Gallery, Newtown, from November 11 to 21. SYKe said she would be up against tough competition to take home the $2000 prize.

"I've seen all the other finalists and I really respect all their work," she said. "I guess mine is different because of the handpainted and collages so hopefully I’m playing up some new techniques rather than the standard."
