Bronnie Ware on Life

Change is constant. We make it easiest on ourselves by accepting that fact. Our ability in letting go of the need for control, giving up the insistence that things have to be a certain way, is a courageous gift of freedom.

It is also a gift of love and gratitude. By surrendering to life, accepting that change is a natural part of the flow, we learn to appreciate the moment for what it is.[..]

Life really is such a short and precious gift. It can also change unexpectedly in one tiny moment. So please, love yourself enough to commit to enjoying your life. Make decisions that support your happiness – your genuine, heartfelt happiness.

Some Quotes

Geoff, Jenny and Joanne - St George Private Hospital - Chemotherapy Ward - 1520hrs Thu 19 Mar 2009

Just found these little quotes that had I saved (would just cut and paste into an email and send it to myself) in the period between Jenny's diagnosis of multiple liver tumors on Wed 11 Mar 2009, and her diagnosis of a 4cm brain tumor on Thu 11 Jun 2009 and resulting neurosurgery on Wed 17 Jun 2009. Interesting to see what resonated with my thoughts and feelings during that time. Here they are:

"Don't think of yourself as a statistic; think of yourself as an individual," - Tue 26 May 2009

"You can't let statistics get in the way of your recovery and progress." - Tue 26 May 2009

"it's not who you are, it's what you do" - Thu 28 May 2009

"Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness is the key to success. If you are happy then you will be successful" - Wed 03 Jun 2009

"You're constantly making choices, and your choices determine your experience" - Wed 03 Jun 2009

And a few months later ..

"Everybody has to die, You don't know how you're going to die. You don't know when you're going to die. It's strange to have that knowledge that this will do it. You don't get angry at it. You just live with it and keep going." - Thu 8 Oct 2009

Two days after the above photo was taken (during her first treatment on a new round of chemotherapy), Jenny would race in the DBNSW 2009 State Titles at Penrith where she stroked the Pacific Dragons Mixed B Boat. Some photos from that day are here.

The following week we would enjoy a lovely holiday in Cairns where we would celebrate Jenny and Joanne's Birtday.

On Letting Go - Jeremy Rolleston (Mon 13 Jan 2014)

Portrait - Amsterdam (Tue 20 Aug 2013)

Jeremy Rolleston (*) writes On Letting Go (*):
Give up the past (*). We’ve all been hurt, we all [..] made mistakes (*), we’ve all had challenges (*) and faced our own battles (*). But don’t let your past define your future (*). Our background and circumstances may have influenced who we are, but they don’t define our future – we are responsible for who we become and for our own happiness (*).

A Couple of Random Quotes (Agile Living)

Hard work provides the opportunity to make sure that when that inspiration comes, you’re ready for it. You can build a solid base while you’re waiting, putting you in the position to use your creativity to propel something that’s already good to a level of greatness.

Planning your Creativity by Thursday Bram (18 Jan 2011)

Striving towards meaningful goals can be an important part of finding satisfaction in life. Remember it is the "striving" that is important, not the achievement. If we do not enjoy the daily commitment to bettering ourselves, it is unlikely that achieving the final objective is going to bring any lasting happiness.

The Problem With Goals by John Bardos (13 Nov 2010)

Finally, I am still trying to take the following post in:
Seems rather timely considering I am thinking a lot about why and what I have posted here over the last 21 months.

Note: Found the web site from where the above posts come from via a Google Search for the term make mistakes well, the title of a recent post. Really quite a coincidence and has given me a lot to think about.

Intersection - S Ashley St / Tampa (Mon 08 Aug 2011)

Walking back to the Hotel at the end of the last day of the Regatta, I saw this scene and captured this photo. To me it marked the end of the campaign (*) and maybe the directional arrows on the road meant something to me as I pondered the reality of my experience in Tampa.

Almost 3 months later I have had plenty of time to reflect on my - our - experience and I move forward enjoying my paddling.

I just read the following quote by Kirk Tuck (*) in a great article (*) about doing the things you love ..
Intention? That has to come from you. But I would suggest that, as a functional person, you no doubt find things in life that spark you up. Give you pleasure, satisfaction, happiness. That inflate your will to live. Distill down to those things and make them the base of your art. Then the intention will drive everything else.
From Developing muscle memory and fluid technique is almost as important as developing a sense of purpose (Kirk Tuck - Wed 28 Sep 2009) (*).

It is a great article (*) from a great blog - The Visual Science Blog / Kirk Tuck (*). Not a bad way to look at things.

On Despair - I Wrote this for You / Iain S. Thomas (Mon 30 Jul 2012)

Self Portrait - Despair - Jerrabomberra Creek / Canberra (Sat 12 Mar 2005)

Iain S. Thomas on Despair:

Appreciate every moment of happiness and remember it when you despair. Hold them close. And when you are happy, remember the moments of despair and think to yourself, "I told you so."

The First Day On Earth by Iain S. Thomas.

Before Tim did what he did, I'm pretty sure I did not know what Despair meant. When we left Canberra the day after we said Goodbye, we went to the place he decided to leave us. When I took this photo of myself, this is when I finally understood what Despair meant - it's written all across my face. And more importantly, I found out what it felt. A hard way to learn the meaning of a word. This is Life and we take from it what we can to make us stronger and more resilient.

I wish you enough - Paulo Coelho (14 Feb 2011)

From I wish you enough - Paulo Coelho (14 Feb 2011)

‘When we said, ‘I wish you enough,’ we were wanting the other person to have a life filled with just enough good things to sustain them.’

Then turning toward me, he shared the following as if he were reciting it from memory.
  •  I wish you enough sun to keep your attitude bright no matter how gray the day may appear.
  •
  •  I wish you enough rain to appreciate the sun even more..

  •  I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive and everlasting.

  •  I wish you enough pain so that even the smallest of joys in life may appear bigger.

  • I wish you enough gain to satisfy your wanting…

  • I wish you enough loss to appreciate all that you possess.
  •
  • I wish you enough hellos to get you through the final good- bye.

On A Moment - Tony Martin / Cycling News / Cycling Central (Tue 07 Jul2015)

Untitled - Ultimo (Wed 08 Jul 2015)

Tony Martin on a Moment:

It was just the right moment for me to try my chance.

Adding:

I don’t know what happened in the back but I was so nervous, I was just pulling. I don’t know how many watts I pulled but it was more than I ever did. Now I am so happy, and a thousand thanks to my team for supporting me the whole week.
via GC stalemate on the cobbles as Martin strikes it fourth time lucky by Cycling Central and Tour de France quotes: Martin digs deep for yellow jersey by Cycling News.

Watched this live – it was 1:15am this morning on the coldest night we have had this winter. Warmed my heart to see him make that break with 3.2km to go and just take it home like he did. You just knew he was going to do “it” and it was not even his own bike, at 20km to go he punctured and swapped bikes with his team mate (as my 3 year old nephew told me 15 years ago - a team is a powerful thing). As Tony Martin said - I actually was [on my limit] when I launched in that moment .. It was just the right moment for me to try my chance. And he found something in himself that he did not know he had - I was so nervous, I was just pulling. I don’t know how many watts I pulled but it was more than I ever did. Often your best is not good enough and the first 3 days of the Tour showed this to Tony Martin and those watching. You have to go Beyond Yourself to find the Happiness he displayed on a life-time Dream come true last night. Just brilliant to watch his performance and his post-race interview. Congrats to Tony Martin.

[Fond memories of Sandy Casar doing the same kind of break in Stage 18 of the 2007 TdF, after crashing with a dog at 27km.]

More On Trying - Iain S. Thomas (Tue 02 Jun 2015)

Whosus - Pacific Dragons Single Craft Day - Barrrenjoey Headland / Palm Beach (Sat 06 Jun 2015)

Iain S. Thomas on Trying:

I've been told I'm special in so many different ways my entire life, why should I have to try, and continue to educate myself, try, and maintain a healthy marriage, try, and exercise, try, and work to accomplish something -- anything -- great?

This is one of the hardest illusions in the world to break. I am not special and I need to try if I want anything. There is nothing sad about that. The only happiness, joy and beauty that isn't temporary, that will nourish your soul and make you feel human and connected to yourself, is found in realizing that you actually have to try.

The Exquisite Beauty of Actually Trying by Iain S. Thomas.

Everybody Needs Love - Drive-By Truckers - David Letterman Show - 21 Jun 2011 (youtube)

Everybody Needs Love - Drive-By Truckers - David Letterman Show - 21 Jun 2011 (youtube)

Back to Kirrawee this week and I have a Television, PVR, Heater and a nice lounge to lay on now. Getting back late each night because of all the training and finding myself falling asleep in front of the Heater and TV. Woke up near the end of The Late Show with David Letterman to this song. Dave liked it that much (as I did - it woke me up nicely) and asked the Guys to play it again after telling a great story - He drove to Kansas City with Song on repeat.

Everybody Needs Love Lyrics

The moonbeams we can dream on
And the working day is done
And there's stars we can wish upon
At the setting of the sun

The sunsets we can cry over
Put our troubles on the hunt
But more than all these miracles above
Good people, we got love

Everybody needs love, love, love
Everybody needs love, love, love, love
Everybody needs love, love, love
Just like they need the sun and moon, and stars up above

And nobody ever found happiness
Living their lives all alone
I used to go around saying I didn't need nobody
To be happy and alone

And one sad day I found myself in trouble
Way down without a friend
Along came the love of a real good woman
Said she'll love me 'til the end

Everybody needs love, love, love
Everybody needs love, love, love, love
Everybody needs love, love, love
Just like they need the sun and moon, and stars up above, mmm

Everybody needs love, love, love
Everybody needs love, love, love, love
Everybody needs love, love, love
Just like they need the sun and moon, and stars up above

Everybody needs love, love, love
Everybody needs love, love, love, love
Everybody needs love, love, love
Just like they need the sun and moon, and stars up above
They need love

Everybody, everybody, everybody needs love
Everybody needs love, love, love, love, love, love, love
Love, love, love, love, love

Love, love, love
Love, love, love
Love, love, love
Love, love, love
Love, love, love
Love, love, love
Love, love, love

As Jeff Fenech once said I love youse all.

Most memorable post-match comments - The Age (09 Oct 2005) ..

Jeff Fenech: [..] Multiple world champion Jeff Fenech was tough, talented and wildly popular. So much so that before his 1987 title fight against Thailand’s Samart Payakarun, Hawke rang to wish him good luck. Perhaps he also offered some tips in the art of memorable speech making, because it was after beating Payakarun into a bloody pulp that Fenech first issued his trademark "I love youse all", following up with the equally catchy: "With 12,000 of the most beautifullest people in the world cheering me on, it’s hard to feel pain." To believe in the Good - Isaac Asimov / Brain Pickings (Thu 03 Jul 2014)

overexposed (*) - Barcelona (Wed 07 Aug 2013)

Isaac Asimov (*) writes:
To me it seems to be important to believe (*) people to be good (*) even if they tend to be bad (*), because your own joy (*) and happiness (*) in life (*) is increased that way, and the pleasures (*) of the belief (*) outweigh the occasional disappointments (*). To be a cynic about people works just the other way around and makes you incapable about enjoying the good things.

On Architecture - John Dalton (1961) / Elizabeth Musgrave (Houses 102)

eljeiffel House - Alexandria (Sat 26 Sep 2015)

John Dalton on Architecture:

for us, life in the sun is a reality, and we who build in the sunlight sense the joy of space and light. It is our delight. The magic of shade and shadow capture our senses and direct us towards our purpose, which is to dispense comfort and happiness through useful form
via Sun and Shadow House by Elizabeth Musgrave.

Been lucky enough to have had an Architect and Builder who knows what this means. I live in the result of that intent and purpose, and I still can't believe it.
